Ingredients
Tofu
- 500g/2 cups firm tofu, drained and patted dry
- 1 tbsp white miso mixed with juice of 1 large lemon in a small bowl
- Sprinkling of salt
- Small bowl of water
- 10g (around 3 large sheets) toasted nori sheets
Beer Batter
- Vegetable oil for deep frying
- 400g/3 cups plain flour
- 3 tsp baking powder
- 2 tsp salt
- 550ml/2⅓ cups vegan beer (use alcohol-free or sparkling water if preferred)
Tartar Sauce (optional)
- 170g/¾ cups vegan mayonnaise
- 1 shallot, finely diced
- 1 tbsp capers, drained
- 1 tbsp gherkins, finely chopped
- ½ tbsp parsley, stalks removed and finely chopped
- ½ tbsp dill, stalks removed and finely chopped
Instructions
Tofu
- Heat a large saucepan (just under) half full of vegetable oil on a medium heat or around 180˚C and while you’re waiting for it to heat up, start making everything else (keep an eye on it).
- Cut the tofu into slices around 0.5cm thick.
- Cover each slice of tofu with the miso/lemon mix then sprinkle them all with a little salt on both sides.
- Tear off pieces of seaweed to wrap the tofu in (you don’t need to be too careful or accurate about this).
- Dip a single strip of seaweed in the bowl of water then wrap it around one of the slices of tofu. Repeat until all the slices have been wrapped.
Beer batter
- Thoroughly combine the plain flour, baking powder and salt in a large bowl, then whisk in the beer until you get a smooth batter.
- Dip a few tofu slices into the batter making sure they’re fully covered. Lower carefully into the hot oil and fry until crisp and golden. Repeat this stage until all pieces are cooked.
Tartar sauce
- Stir all the ingredients together and decorate with a couple of sprigs of dill.

Did you know that the Vegan Recipe Club is run by Viva!, and that we are a charity?
We create vital resources to help educate everyone – vegan veterans, novices and the v-curious alike – about vegan food, health and nutrition; as well as the plight of farmed animals and the devastating environmental impact of farming.
Through this work we have helped thousands of people discover veganism; but we want to reach millions more! We rely entirely on donations as we don’t get any government funding. If you already support us, thank you from the bottom of our hearts, you are really making a difference! Please share our details with your friends and loved ones too, as every donation enables us to keep fighting for change.
