Tangy not-Goat Cheese

This little number doesn't taste exactly like goat's cheese but it is very  tasty.  

So give it a go! We suggest trying it 

  • cold with olives, crusty bread and salad
  • smeared over baked, stuffed butternut squash or other hot veg dishes  

but experiment and see what you think.

It's also much kinder to goats, as you will realise if you check out Viva!'s Nanny State campaign! Plus it is healthier (there is a myth that goat's cheese/milk is better for you than dairy from cows but it's actually pretty high in animal fats) - and better for the environment, as all grazing animals contribute to a whopping 18% of greenhouse gases. (That's more than all transport put together).



  • 1/4 cup raw cashew pieces, ground to a powder
  • 175g/generous 6oz firm plain tofu, squeezed as dry as possible then crumbled
  • half a clove of garlic, crushed
  • 1½-2 tbsp pale miso
  • 1-2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1-2 tbsp nutritional yeast flakes**
  • Salt to taste
  • Pale or sweet miso - brands to look for are Clearspring; Sanchi or SourceFoods - some of these brands are available in larger Sainsbury or Waitrose - or a good health food shop
  • Nutritional yeast flakes (not to be confused with brewers yeast!) - Engevita brand available from health food shops. Delicious as a condiment or in other vegan cheesy alternatives, like our sauce recipe


1. Blend the tofu until it is smooth and creamy. Add the powdered cashews and the rest of the ingredients and blend again.Taste and adjust flavouring - eg a little more miso/lemon juice/salt/yeast flakes...

2. Place in an airtight container and store in the fridge. It will keep for up to 4 days like this.
