Instant Porridge Guide

Yes, those little sachets of instant porridge… ! Of course, it’s easy enough to make porridge from scratch – see below – but the sachets are handy too!

Quaker Oats So Simple – of 10 flavours, all are vegan EXCEPT Honey & Vanilla or Maple Pecan. 8 out of 10 isn’t bad…

Many other supermarket brands are also suitable for vegans, just read the labels or ask staff to check for you. Original and Golden Syrup are nearly always vegan, as are some of the fruity ones.

Almost Instant from scratch?

  1. Soak ¼-1/3 cup porridge oats in a bowl with plant milk of your choice – preferably overnight. We love soya for that creamy taste but others like almond, hemp, home made cashew…
  2. When you are ready to cook it, make sure the oats are covered by about 2cm/1 inch plant milk or water
  3. Place the bowl in the microwave and cook for 2 minutes at high power (this is based on an 800w microwave – you may need to adjust if yours is lower or higher than this)
  4. Make sure the liquid is almost absorbed and the porridge is tender but go easy – it will be hot!

Optional extras
Chopped banana
Berries
Raisins or any other dried fruit, eg chopped figs, dates…
Agave, date or maple syrup (or brown sugar)
Extra plant milk

Did you know that Vegan Recipe Club is run by a charity?

We create vital resources to help educate everyone – vegan veterans, novices and the v-curious alike – about vegan food, health and nutrition; as well as the plight of farmed animals and the devastating environmental impact of farming.

Through this work we have helped thousands of people discover veganism; but we want to reach millions more! We rely entirely on donations as we don’t get any government funding. If you already support us, thank you from the bottom of our hearts, you are really making a difference! Please share our details with your friends and loved ones too, as every donation enables us to keep fighting for change.
