Broccoli & Smoky Tofu in Hoisin Sauce

Serves: 2-4

Broccoli & Smoky Tofu in Hoisin Sauce

A simple, fresh and satisfying dish that is very tasty. Check that the hoisin sauce is gluten-free if necessary. 

Ingredients: 

  • 125g/4oz white rice
  • 500g/generous 1lb broccoli cut into medium-small florets - peel the tough outer stalk before chopping
  • 1 tbsp toasted sesame oil
  • 250-300g/8-10oz packet smoked tofu, drained and pressed with kitchen towel or a clean teatowel to remove excess liquid - then sliced into thin pieces
  • 4 tbsp hoisin sauce (available in jars from supermarkets and elsewhere)
  • 1 tbsp good quality soya sauce, eg shoyu or tamari Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Method: 

1. Boil the kettle. Pour its contents into a saucepan, bring to the boil, add a little salt and cook the rice for exactly 11 minutes - set a timer or use your mobile phone alarm!

2. Steam the broccoli florets in a big steamer or else cook in a little boiling water in a covered pan for about 3-4 minutes - until just tender.

3. Meanwhile, heat sesame oil in a frying pan or wok and fry tofu on both sides, until crisp and golden brown. Add the cooked tofu to broccoli, together with hoisin and soy sauce. Taste and season with salt and pepper if necessary, heat through then keep warm until the rice is ready.

4. Check that the rice isn't over-cooking - if you run out of time, drain and rinse in cold water to prevent it cooking any more in the hot water. Otherwise just drain as usual and serve the tofu/broccoli and sauce mixture on a bed of rice.
